ANATOMICAL REVIEW: MUSCLES OF THE FOOT

June 04, 2018  /  The Scribbler

The lumbricals of the foot arise from the medial borders of the long flexor tendons and insert at the proximal phalanges & extensor tendons of the four lesser toes. They serve to flex the Metatarsal phalangeal joints and extend the interphalangeal joints.

These are small, accessory muscles. Accessory in the sense that they activate along side larger, primary movement muscles. They are part of the foot pad, and as such are part of the transverse arch.
